SSO using SharePoint web service RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Team,

I am using SharePoint web services to authenticate user using user name and password. Once user gets authenicated i am accessing SharePoint content using web services only. Now my question is, is there any way (web service) to authenticate user against SharePoint without using user name and password approach.

    Thanks.... ________________ Baba (MCTS, MCPD)

  • You could use SAML tokens or client certificates depending on your environment, take a look at the Plan Authentication Methods article.

But my concern is regarding SharePoint web services, will i be able to authenticate user against SharePoint using web service. if yse then which web service should i go for, i did RND but i didnt found any web service which will return SAML token for any user.

Note: i am calling my SharePoint web services from Ruby application.

  • don't understand what you really mean:

The built in SharePoint 2010 security token service is a web service, it can get SAML token from federation authentication module and return session token:  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/besidethepoint/archive/2012/05/03/sharepoint-claims-ws-and-the-windows-identity-foundation-wif.aspx

  • Thanks GUYuming,

Saw the artical at the link provider by you, it talks about how broser handle request and transfer it to STS for user authentication,

but is it possible to use the built in SharePoint 2010 security token service in third party applicationts like we use list.asmx?

  • Hi GuYuming,

The link provided is very good and helpfull for me. But my concern is will anonymous user be able to fetch access token for himself using the securitytokenwebservice?

My requirement is i need to access/upload documents in/from SharePoint using Third party application without asking user for credentails.
