update IE 8 to IE 11 with Enterprise Mode with minimal reboots RRS feed

  • Question

  • got a large number of machines running IE8. Is there an offline installer for IE 11.0.11 which includes the ability to enable enterprise mode, or are you stuck downloading the version released in November 2013, rebooting, patching to get enterprise mode available, then rebooting again?

thanks in advance for any guidance.

  • Hi Adam,

I would suggest that you contact a support engineer from MS (http://support.microsoft.com) to discuss your upgrade strategy.

There are a number of pre-requisites for IE8-IE11 , that probably require an online connection...directX, device drivers...

Normally in a corporate environment IEAK is used to create  a custom stand-alone installer... and from that slip-stream the image to clients if no connections are available. (IEAK uses the latest version of IE downloaded from MS images).

'Enterprise Mode' just means that that version of IE can use an administrator maintained list of domains to control Compatibility View settings of client browsers, similar to the Microsoft list of public websites that require compatibility view tweaking. There are no client settings to administer and it is turned on or off using GPO.

  • thank you for that information. Is Enterprise Mode available in version  IE11.0.9600.16428 (released as offline installer in 11/2013)? We've tried applying the required settings via GPO, and the Enterprise Mode option only seems to show up after applying KB's 2929437 and 2976627. If we can enable Enterprise mode after the initial update to IE 11 prior to the patching, that will put us in a good spot.

  • we have the following set in group policy under User Configuration:

Let users turn on and use Enterprise Mode from the Tools menu Enabled

Use the Enterprise Mode IE website list Enabled

Again these settings don't seem to take after the initial install of IE 11 (and reboot), only after patching.

    Is our issue GPO application?

  • Hi,

I know what does your mean, however, to enable Enterprise Mode do need to install IE updates, like KB2929437. You can refer to the link below for more details about this.

Until these updates patched, you can enable Enterprise Mode through Group Policy or Registry.
