Table calculation too slow in MS Word RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a large document with some 28 pages, with page breaks. (28 Tables). It has some 210 data entry formfields, and 520 Formula fields.

While making data entry, response is very slow it takes nearly 5 seconds to make entry in one field.

How can I improve the performance?

Secondly what is the sequence of calculation in a document? (e.g top left to bottom right)

    Thanks

  • I'd suggest reducing the number of formfields with the 'calculate on exit' option checked to a minimum. You could, for example, limit this to the final 'compulsory' formfield. In some cases, on-exit macros attached to particular formfields to update only specified formula fields might also be of benefit. You would use this if, in order to make an informed entry into a given formfield, the user needs information that has to be calculated from data input elsewhere.

  • Thanks sir.

For certain reasons, Macros are not permitted so I am using inbuilt formulas. As suggested, I will try to reduce the calculate on exit fields.

    Any more suggestions?

  • Another approach, where the same calculation is being done repeatedly, is to embed one instance of that calculation in a SET field, then refer to the SET field's bookmark wherever the results of that calculation are required.

Yet another is to use numeric picture switches to embed calculations or generate results that might otherwise require IF tests.

You can see examples of both approaches my Word Field Maths Tutorial and my Word Date Calculation Tutorial. You can download the former from:
