Expanding SFB (Skype for Business) Edge Pool

    Question

  • I expect this is documented somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

I am working to migrate our on-prem SFB environment to be HA. I currently have only one Edge server and want to add an additional but I need to figure out what kind of down time to expect. Does adding to the Edge pool require a full pool reset like adding FE servers does? Can an edge server be added without taking the Edge and/or FE pool down?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • You are probably looking at upgrading from a single Edge server to an Edge Pool.

You would first need to add a new Edge Pool with at least two servers within the pool in the topology. Check out the following blog by Jeff Schertz on how to do that.

    http://blog.schertz.name/2016/03/skype-for-business-2015-edge-pool-deployment/

Once the installation is completed and Edge pool is included in the topology, you would have to point your SfB FE pools to the new Edge pool for Media Relay.

Also, change the Federation routes for your SfB sites in Topology Builder to point to the new Edge pool.

Once done, you can go ahead and take out the old Edge server from your topology.

  • Just to clarify... even though the topology builder shows I have an edge pool with one server, you are saying it is not actually a pool until I have multiple edge servers. So I need to create a new edge pool and I can't expand the existing one?

Here's how the edge pool looks in my current topology.

  • Oh! If you already have an Edge pool with one Edge server, you don't need to remove that. When you said Edge Server in your original post, I assumed it means just one server without a pool.

You can go ahead and add another server to that referencing the same article I posted above.
