Windows 10 phone- where to find the bitlocker recovery key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good Morning!

Does anyone know how to locate the bitlocker recovery key from my windows 10 phone (w10 lumia 950XL)?

I don't need to recover any data, and my phone is fine; I just need to unlock a microSDXC card that was bitlocked on the phone so I can reformat it. The card on my phone had recently become corrupted, so the phone cannot write to the SD card anymore- that means turning encryption "OFF" on the phone does not disable bitlocker from the sdxc card. I'd like to try and reformat the card, but I'm stuck without the key (for the record I've tried to force reformatting using diskpart, format, and ckdsk and none worked). Since it's a 128gb samsung sdxc I'd be out $50-60 if this sdxc card is bricked, I'd like to reformat it and re-use it if I can. I just need that bitlocker recovery key from my phone to unlock the damned thing, but I have no idea how to get it.

I've checked my microsoft account and did notice a bitlocker key saved, but it seems to be for one of my other devices (tried it just in case, but that recovery key failed to unlock the card).

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Formatting works without unlocking.

If not, please try diskpart clean.

  • As I stated, I have already tried diskpart, ckdisk, format and also tried reformatting through disk managment. None have worked despite repeated attempts. After the reformatting is supposedly complete, I'm still prompted for my bitlocker key to unlock the microsd card, and the data is still fully intact (confirmed when re-inserted into my windows phone and the files are still there). I've also tried reformatting on a Mac using disk tools only to have the same result.

  • Diskpart clean says it cleaned the disk but afterwards the data is still there?
