Post-deployment Configuration fails for Windows Server Essentials (R2) RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • When executing the post-configuration step on a Windows Server 2012 R2 preview server, the following error message is generated and there appears no way to debug:

Configuration encountered some issues.  Please click Retry.  If the issue still exists please refer to the help link for more troubleshooting steps.  (The help link is still incomplete and no troubleshootiing steps exist.)

Where is the log file that contains the current status on this wizard's progress?

  • Hi,

Is there any error was logged in the event log? You’d better provide more detailed information about the current issue.

    Best Regards,

  • That's just it Andy,

There are no events logged in System, Setup, Application logs that correspond to the execution of the Post-install wizard.  If you can point me to the corresponding PS script, I'll run that and try to capture error information.

    Kind regards,

    Dan

  • I second that.  I have encountered the exact same thing and can't find any information at all about what is wrong.  The event logs have nothing relevant.

  • Same here with the German RTM Edition, After Domain Join and upgrade to Domain Controller the Installation Stops, it says that i have to retry it, but not whats going wrong.

EDID: I got it working after installing Windows updates. And pressing the repeat button some times

  • I just found the SetupCmdlets.log file but it doesn't seem to have anything useful.  I see no errors there either:

  • I have the exact same problem ..I do recall from trying the Preview that this would fail if the local drive was to small. I also seem to be getting an error in the Application readiness Log when I try to do the config but I really don't have a clue if it is really related and the online links go nowhere. I am trying to do this on a fresh 2012r2 set as a domain controller (not PDC)  and running the config right after install ..my vm disk is at 100g (size that worked in preview) at the moment and still fails.

  • I had the same issue but was able to resolve this issue.

The post-config wizard won't let you configure the Essentials Experience role because it's unable to start the 'Windows Server Essentials Management Service' system service. This service is configured to run under the <domain>\ServerAdmin$ account. This account must have 'Log on as a service' rights.

    • Go to Group Policy Management
    • Edit your policy, such as the 'Default Domain Controllers Policy'
    • Go to Computer Configuration \ Windows Settings \ Security Settings \ Local Policies \ User Rights Assignment
    • Edit 'Log on as a service' and add 2 accounts: <domain>\ServerAdmin$ and <domain>\MediaAdmin$

The ServerAdmin$ is enough to let the wizard finish the configuration. The MediaAdmin$ is needed for the 'Windows Server Essentials Media Streaming Service'.

    Hope this helps.
