Reason for not able to recover single item in DPM 2010 for Exchange 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I've been using Symantec BackupExec to backup Exchange server for years. This is the first time I came across DPM. Surprise to me that DPM does not provide a easy way to recovery single items from previous backup. I am not going to jump to the judge here, but it will definitely save a lot time, if DPM provides such feature(Yes, I know you can recover single item from the recovered mailbox). Maybe there is a reason MS consider that is not a best pratice? Symantec BE is using VSS same as DPM, why DPM cannot do something BE can do, give the fact DPM is developed by MS yourself?

  • Looks like other products are reverse engineering Exchange mailbox database .edb file, which is not supported from Exchange. I couldn't find technet document on this, will update the thread if I find one.

  • DPM does not provide the feature as Exchange does not support item level recovery.

  • Well, why I can do it with Symantec BE then? Exchange does not support item level recovery does not mean the backup software cannot provide the feature! In addition, can you provide a MS doco that indicates Item Level Recovery is not supported in Exchange (2010)?
