Word 2010 doesn't close while Windows Explorer is open. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Problem: When a Word document is opened using Windows Explorer and then closed again the Word GUI will not close.

    System: HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop
Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.20GHz
    700GB HD
    8GB RAM
    Office 2010 Professional 32-bit

    Description:
When the user opens a Word document using Windows Explorer the document opens in Word without any problems and can be edited and saved like normal. There are no problems with the operation of Word. However, the problem occurs when the document is closed again. This problem is intermittent and there are two primary scenarios that occur.

Scenario 1: In this scenario after opening a document Word comes to the foreground with the new document opened and Windows Explorer is still open in the background. Now when the document is closed the Windows Explorer window comes to the foreground and the Word window goes to the background instead of closing. At this point Word has closed the document and where the document would be the background is white. At this point Word will close if you close the Windows Explorer window or you can minimize the Windows Explorer window and then hit the X button to close out of the Word window. Also, if you double click within the Windows Explorer window (not on any files but in some empty space) Word will finish closing, sometimes.

Scenario 2: If once you have tried to close the document and have the Windows Explorer window in the foreground with Word in the background and you open another document the Windows Explorer window will come up in the foreground with the Word document opened in the background. At this point, if you close the Windows Explorer window and then try closing the document the document closes but you are left with Word still open and frozen. The only way to close word at this point is to kill it using Task Manager. If you don't close the Windows Explorer window, but instead close the Word window it will go back to Scenario 1.

    Work Performed:
We walked through the FixIt program and the manual steps in the following MS Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
    Created a different user profile.
    Uninstalled Office and reinstalled it.
Reset the system to its factory state using the Recovery Partition.

NOTE: None of these steps have fixed the problem. After reinstalling Office and refurbishing the system it worked for a short time, but then started occurring again.

  • Hi,

Please try to turn off Preview Pane in Windows Explorer test if it helps:

Start Windows Explorer -> Organize -> Layout -> Unselect Preview Pane.

You may also troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows 7:

  • Thanks for your response! That was it. I didn't even think about the fact that the preview pane was being used.
