Windows Server 2012 R2 HyperV Migration Query RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have 100 VMs of Windows XP SP3 & Windows Server 2003, spread on Windows Server 2008 SP1 HyperV and Windows Server 2008 R2 HyperV host Servers (Standalone). I need to migrate these all VMs from these host servers to Windows Server 2012 R2 HyperV Cluster? I have SCVMM 2012 SP1 installed in my environment.

    How can I achieve this?

From TechNet I could not find the possible way to address this migration.

    Thanks & Regards, Kedar

  • There is no live migration capability from 2008 to 2012.  But, 2012 did introduce the ability to import a VM directly from the VM's files without the need to first export it (as was required in 2008).  So you will have to import all the VMs into 2012 environment.

  • First of all you need VMM 2012R2 for dealing with Hyper-V 2012R2 Servers.

VMM 2012R2 Supports also your older Versions of Hyper-V , 2008 and 2008R2.

Then you can do a V2V or Migration  with VMM.
