Explorer copy error 0x8007003a RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good day,

I was curious if anyone had encountered this particular error previously.  We have migrated to SharePoint 2013 and now users are reporting a semi-repeatable error when copying document sets and documents from a library with the explorer view.  When performing the copy a generic error of 0x8007003a is reported and gives the user an option to retry the copy.

the interesting thing is that most times it will work on the second try.  Specifics on the explorer copy:

    - Sites are https

    - total size of the document set is under 5Mb

    - Site is in the trusted sites list of IE

  • Troubleshooting steps

    1. Please try copying an individual document from the document set
    2. Next, please individually select two or more documents in the document set and copy those - Note: do not copy the "document set" - just the individual files
    3. Repeat step 2), but this time try it when first logged into WFE1 and then again when logged into WFE2
    4. If you haven't done so already, add the share Point farm URL to the Trusted Zone and repeat.

Let me know your findings.  Also, background questions:

    1. What browser type and version are you using for this task
    2. What is the version of the Office documents you are copying
    3. In what zone is your SharePoint instance URL
    4. What type of NLB is deployed to this farm: Windows Server NLB or hardware
    5. When copying a document set that then generates the error, how long is the URL string for this document set
    6. Is this an intranet SharePoint instance or Internet-facing?

  • Troubleshooting steps:

    • How many WFEs in this farm and are they in NLB configuration
    • What are the events that are appearing in WFE system and application event logs
    • What messages are appearing in ULS logs on these WFEs at the time the copy was attempted
    • Do these copy events involve single documents, a bunch of documents, documents in a folder copied over, etc...
    • Is it copying FROM a SharePoint document library or TO or BOTH that generates this error

    • How many WFEs in this farm and are they in NLB configuration

     - There are two WFEs in a NLB configuration

    • What are the events that are appearing in WFE system and application event logs

    - Nothing appears out of the ordinary in the event logs

    • What messages are appearing in ULS logs on these WFEs at the time the copy was attempted

    - Looking over ULS I can see calls for the file, which appear to be successful.

    - Ex: Name=Request(....<file>/desktop.ini);

    - non-oauth request, IsAuthenticated=true

     - HTTP Request Method: PROPFIND...

    • Do these copy events involve single documents, a bunch of documents, documents in a folder copied over, etc...

     - The primary time this occurs is when copying a document set from SharePoint to the desktop.  Document sets are ~5Mb in total size.  Most contain a word document and a PDF document

    • Is it copying FROM a SharePoint document library or TO or BOTH that generates this error

    - So far this only seems to occur when copying FROM SharePoint.
