Unable to load a driver on a Windows XP SP3 on a Dell E6520 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am unable to get a driver to load on Windows XP SP3 for the NVIDIA NVS 4200M display chipset.  I enabled debug level logging for SetupAPI but it is not clear what is failing. It says the Co-Installer is returning an ERROR 2 (File Not Found) but it is not clear WHAT file it is reporting as not found.

Does anyone know how to enable for advanced debug logging so I can get an idea of what is failing?

  • I set the debug logging on the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\LogLevel = FF

  • I needed to restart for the debug logging to take effect.  This had the side effect of ignoring the ERROR 2 and the driver loaded successfully.

It turns out the "File Not found" error messages was from the [nv_system32_copyfiles] section in NVDM.INF in the driver file.  I'm not sure why the Co-Installer was reporting this as an error.
