  • Question

  • Hi,

We are using SQL Server 2012, 2016 and 2017 Enterprise Edition. We are using 2 node Failover clustering and Logshipping for DR (Disaster Recovery).  Can anyone let me know about below query-

    1) SQL Server Failover cluster needs additional license or not?

    2) SQL Server Failover cluster need sql server license for both node or not?

    3) SQL Server does DR machine (Log Shipping) requires license?

    Regards

  • Hi arifulhaq,

We don’t need additional license as usually. The log shipping and failover cluster features are supported for SQL server enterprise edition. But there are many factors need to be considered.  For detailed information about the license issue, I still suggest that you can consult professionals in this area. Please call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. For international customers, please use the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/worldwide to find contact information in your locations.

  • There are many factors, such as whether you have volume licensing and software assurance. That being said, this forum is for technical questions so questions about licensing are off topic. For the authoritative answer to licensing questions in the US, call (1-800-426-9400), Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST to speak directly to Microsoft licensing specialist. For other counties, see https://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/.

You might be able to get some answers from the licensing guide.

    Hi Cathy,

    Thanks for the feedback.

    To all,

Who have similar query- so far I have researched Microsoft do not require additional SQL Server licence for Standby node for Fail-over Cluster and also no additional license require for Logshipping until it is truely standby systems. Logshipping database can be also used as read-only mode, is so then logshipping also require additional license.

    Regards

    Arif
