Default Windows SNMP firewall exception not working

  • I've just built a Windows 2012 server. After installing the SNMP service I saw that the windows firewall already had two rules that allowed SNMP traffic enabled. However, they don't appear to work. I am unable to do an SNMP query on the server.

Only after I added a custom rule that opened port 161 for UDP was I able to SNMP query the windows 2012 server.

Question: Is there a known issue where the Windows default SNMP firewall rules don't work?

  • Perhaps the rule is more restrictive. I remember problems with SNMP that were caused by disabled write.

  • Milos lead me down the right path. The default firewall SNMP rule has a scope that limits the remote IP address to Local subnet. My management machine was on a different subnet. I switched it to Any IP address and everything works.

    Problem solved.
