IE on quitting makes desktop freeze RRS feed

  • Question

  • (My client has an Acer 4810TZG laptop running Win 7 Home Premium)

Win 7 and IE are fully up to datre.

If I run IE and then close it down, the shortcut icons on the desktop no longer light up in response to the mouse / trackpad, nor do the shortcuts work.

However shortcut icons in the taskbar continue to work normally. Likewise shortcuts from the Start Menu also work fine.

The programs also once loaded work normally.

If I drag an icon from the Start Menu onto the desktop it appears but it still doesn't function.

The only way to get desktop icons to work normally is to reboot!!

    Suggestions please?

    Howard

  • Open IE without add-ons and check if the problem persists:

Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Internet Explorer (no Add-ons).

  • Hi Howard,

If the issue only occurs on the desktop shortcut, please delete the desktop shortcut and then go to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer, right click on iexplore.exe and then click Send to -> Desktop (create shortcut). Go to the Desktop and check if the shortcut works.

If the issue persists, test the issue using Internet Explorer (IE) with no add-ons mode as Daniel mentioned. Also, access Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
