New tabs do not load in IE8 RRS feed

  • Question

  • While browsing, I often click links with the middle mouse button or right-click and choose "Open in New Tab." In IE8, however, this often fails.
The new tab opens, but it does not load the page: it just sits there, with Connecting... displayed in the tab's title. If I click on the tab, the address it's trying to load (not the page title) appears in the IE window's Title bar.
If I close the reluctant tab and try again, I get the same result. The only way to open the link in a new tab is to try several times: after three, or five, or more attempts, one of the new tabs will load the page. (The other tabs will never load the page, no matter how long I wait).

I've had this problem on more than one brand of PC and on several different clean blank-drive builds of XP Pro, Vista, and Windows 7 RC and RTM, so I know it's not unique to any particular Windows installation or hardware build.
It has reached the point that I use Firefox, which I loathe , on my own work laptop... I would greatly prefer a Microsoft solution.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for posting here.

Mostly, this issue is caused by a third party software/toolbars/add-on. You can try to take the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

    1.       Create a new user to test the issue. If the problem disappear, the issue should be related to a local setting/software.

    2.       Run IE under No Add-ons Mode to test the issue.

    3.       Reset IE settings to test the issue.

Does it work? Hope it helps.

    Best regards,

  • You may have hit this one on the head.

I disabled add-ons, one by one (I didn't have many), and disabling AVG SafeSearch caused the problem to improve (one in four tabs not loading, instead of three out of four), but not completely disappear.
So, I uninstalled AVG Free, rebooted, and the problem seems to be gone.
