Opening Excel File with Power Query is consuming excessive resources (memory/processor...) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear All,

when I just open excel file(s) with Power Queries (just open, without doing anything else), Excel starts increasingly using resources.

I did some checks, and I am sure it is because of Power Query.

Any Ideas how to deal with that?

    Excel version: MS Excel 2016 (16.0.6965), 64bit

    OS: Win 8.1

Thx a lot for your support

    R.

  • This can be due to the background refresh. Try disabling it:

  • Yes. I totally forgot this feature introduced few months ago.

  • By default, EVERY workbook has this background process turned on?!? And here we are with reports of excessive CPU usage?

Is there any way to reverse the default globally, or am I going to have to turn off this setting for every workbook I open until MS addresses this or my CPU melts? I'm REALLY tired of overheat alarms going off on a PC with four fans in it ...

  • Hi Bill.

Yes, the default setting is turned on.

I guess, there might be setting key for it in registers (via regedit), but I never searched for it. if you are familiar with registers, try to find.

FYI: I am having this issue only with large files with a lot of queries in.
