SC2012 DPM - Can Running Recovery Point Creation Be Stopped On Schedule RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello!

Here is a scenario: There is a DPM Server in central office and there is a DPM-protected computer in the remote location. We are backing up BMR + System State and All Volumes. File recovery points and application recovery points (express full backup) is scheduled to run at night, but because of the slow link it may not finish prior the business day begins. We are aware that usually only the initial replica creation takes the highest amount of time and after that only the changed blocks are transmitted, but we may face the situation that the recovery points creation is not finished prior the time when the remote office starts the operations in the morning. In our scenario we want the recovery points to start at 10:30 PM and finish at 7:30 AM. Synchronization frequency will occur just before a recovery point. Here are my questions:

      • 1. Can the recovery points creation be somehow interrupted if it is not finished by 7:30 AM in the morning?
      • 2. Is it correct to presume that the replica may be inconsistent if the recovery points creation is interrupted?
      • 3. If so, is the way to remediate this is to check "Run a daily consistency check according to the following schedule" in the "Choose consistency check options" page of the Modify Group wizard?
      • 4. Should the start time be set prior to the recovery points start? Should the "Maximum duration" be set so the consistency check would not overlap with the beginning of the recovery points creation? I.e. "Start time" is 7:00 PM and "Maximum duration" is 3 hours so "forceful" consistency check would finish prior to 10:30 PM?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

  • Hi,

Q1. Can the recovery points creation be somehow interrupted if it is not finished by 7:30 AM in the morning?
A1. Not automatically, you would need to cancel the ongoing job.  It sounds like you are running a BMR nightly ?  That seems to be overkill so I would seperate the BMR backup from the volume backup and place MBR in a seperate protecion group and run it only on the weekend. This should allow the volume backups to run and finish before the 7:30 AM deadline.

Q2. Is it correct to presume that the replica may be inconsistent if the recovery points creation is interrupted?
A2. Yes, if a synchronization fails before it is finished, it will result in an inconsistent replica.

Q3. If so, is the way to remediate this is to check "Run a daily consistency check according to the following schedule" in the "Choose consistency check options" page of the Modify Group wizard?
A3.  You can actually check both options so we run a CC when it becomes inconsistent, and if that CC fails, we can run it again at the scheduled time.  Only if the replica is really inconsistent will it actually run when scheduled.

A4. No future recovery points can be made until the replica is consistent, so the CC has to finish to be beneficial. Best to let it run until it finishes.
