Excel Extenal Data Refresh will not work with Excel Online, but will when openned in Excel

    Question

  • Hi,

I have Excel file with a  data connection to "From SharePoint Online List".  The connection works, able to refresh it while in Excel,  however cannot refresh in Excel Online

There error is "External Data Refresh Failed ....  We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook.

What am I missing in the set-up that it works in Excel and on Excel Online?

Is there a setting to say "Allow" Refresh with Excel online?

    Tx

  • Hi Andrew,

How did you created the data collection in excel?

Some—but not all—of the data sources that you can use in Excel are supported in SharePoint Online, for more detailed information, refer to the following article:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Use-external-data-in-workbooks-in-SharePoint-Online-8d7f5dc6-8384-4d7d-b00f-b283c1e192ef?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

To consume a list in SharePoint Online via Excel Online, refer to the following article step by step:

  • Lisa,

Thank you this is great information.... I was not using OData Feed Source type, now I can refresh the data.

Now I have my next Challenge which is the ability to refresh the data without having to open the Excel workbook in Excel Online.  I have set the refresh rate to 2 mins, which works while I have the file open.

I have created a SharePoint Page and displaying the Excel file as a Dashboard type UI experience, so users have the ability to view the data without opening the file, however it is not refreshing the data when I open the page

    Any Ideas

    Regards

    Andrew
