Symbol in equations disappears. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello!

I have posted this in the Microsoft Community originally, and was referred to this support forum. My problem is as follows.

I am using Word 2010 and have a lot of equations is my document.

Some of these equation fields just contain "k=A,B" (so, there are no specialised symbols).
After I save the file and re-open it, some of the "k"-s disappear, i.e. some of these equation fields just contain "=A,B". The disappeared "k"-s are not replaced by any other symbol or space, but rather there are 4 symbols in those equation fields instead of 5.
I have not yet figured out what the choice of fields depends on. At the moment two thirds of the "k-s" have disappeared (in different places in the document). Re-opening the file, rebooting the computer does not help.

I am running Word from the University server, so I do not have access to any "under the bonnet" features, i.e. I cannot re-install the Equation Editor or switch to Math Type.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Anne,

When did you find this start to happen? Could you remember anything happened around that?

    How many documents get affected?

Try to narrow down the cause of the issue with the following steps:

    • Check if there are any special add-ins or macros are enabled or in use, disable them if there are any.
    • In Word Options - Display, enable the option - Show all formatting marks, see if we can find anything
    • In Review tab, click to enable the Track Changes feature, see if we can find out what happened

  • Did you ever figure this out? I have the same issue. I've spoken to Microsoft tech support several times, and they keep thinking they fixed it, only for the letters to disappear again from the equations later on. I've tried the steps suggested below: I've removed all of the add-ins and macros, formatting marks are enabled and shown, and I've even tried track changes. When I have track changes enabled, it shows the changes as I make them, but then when I save and close the document, most or all of the changes are gone and it appears as though I've made no edits to the document. Any other ideas?

  • Has anybody found an explanation or solution to this "disappearing letters in equation" symptom? I've just come across the same problem in one of my Word docs. All info greatly appreciated.
