.msg files are dead RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Recently, I have had a problem with .msg files. When I click on them with Outlook 2010, Outlook simply freezes. It won't open them. The files also no longer have the Outlook icon, they just have a generic (white rectangle) icon. I can't move or delete them without special programs like MoveOnBoot. When I deal with these files, it frequently screws up Explorer in the sense that it will no longer show subordinate folders in the left-hand side. I have to delete the icons cache or restart to get it back to normal.

I have repaired Office / Outlook and even deinstalled Office and then reinstalled it, so the problem doesn't seem to be with Office itself, but rather some conflict in Windows 7.

I have tried a number of things (deleting the icons cache, deactivating add-ins for Outlook and many other things), but nothing seems to help.

Thanks in advance for even a hint as to what I could try next.

  • I have exactly the same issue.  Where was this question bumped to?  I've looked in the Outlook forum but it doesn't seem to be there.
