Start "orb" replaced with square gray box with text "Start" inside? RRS feed

  • Question

  • After uninstalling the touchpad driver in my new Toshiba P500-ST6822 laptop, Windows 7 rebooted normally but the usual Windows Start "Orb" was gone and in its place was a
simple gray box with the word "Start" inside.
I successfully reinstalled the touchpad driver but the square "Start" box is still there
How do I recover the regular Windows Start "Orb?"

  • Thanks to info from the Toshiba forum, the "problem" is solved.  I'd unwittingly switched the Windows 7 theme to "Classic."  Live & learn!

  • Glad you got it fixed.  With all the people pining for the old classic look of XP, I find your viewpoint refreshing.  :)

  • Noel,

Glad to find this post.  TOday somehow I did the same thing.  I remember choosing classic view, but dont know where.?  Now the start orb is a start button and the start menus look like XP. I want them to look like Win 7.  I cant believe I cant find this.

ANy idea where to reset this ....to off?

  • 1. Right-click on an open portion of your desktop, and choose Personalize.
    2. Click on the Windows 7 theme.

That should return you to the default desktop appearance.
