  • Question

  • Hi,

I've found an issue regarding using both versions of Project 2010 and 2016.

We need to have both versions of project installed, but the latest version to be installed is the one that remains as the default app to open .mpp files.

Even if we try to "open with" the diferent version from the default one, it opens up with the default version of Project.

At the moment the user can bypass this by opening the Project app and then loading the file in question.

Is there any workaround for this?

    Thank you in advance

  • The last installed is the default as you have already discovered.  That just the way it is

    Here are my suggestions

    1) Open the project image from the directory.  Perhaps create a short-cut and run thru wizard.  Then open short-cut and update the Start-in directory.  There is also a compatibility mode tab and setup there as well.

    2) still not working. Then setup a VM on your desktop

  • Didn't you already find the workaround? It is always better to open a file from the app.

  • I don't know if it still works, but you used to be able to go to the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel and repair the installation of whichever version you want to make it the default.

It really is best to open the app first and then open the file.

  • Regarding the default app , yes repairing the one you prefer as default works perfectly.

at the moment i did that to have project 2010 as default.

but, whenever we want to open a file as project 2016, you cannot do so trough the "open with" menu on the file, but you can open the file via the app itself.

although this isn't a big issue to me since it has a workaround, most users cannot understand this and refuse to accept a workaround as a solution.

thanks to all for the replies, to me this is solved.

  • Kind of a dumb question, but why do you have to open some files in 2010 and some in 2016? I believe the file formats haven't changed since 2003 or 2007. Have you had problems mixing the versions?

  • From what i'm told, whatever they use it for it's not compatible with project 2016.

but project 2016 is needed for another purposes.
