Need to give Power Users the Rights to Run Win XP Defrag at their discretion RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a 2008R2 AD Doman with WinXP pc's. I know how to schedule a task to run the defrag at startup, shutdown and how to schedule a scheduled task.  However, I can't find how to provide Power User's rights to run a defrag anytime they want? Is there a way to give them the  rights to defrag.exe?

    Thank you.

Answers

  • Just schedule the defrag to run once a week using Task Scheduler.

If Defrag is run regulkarly it run very quickly; sometimes in under 5 minutes.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Yes, just add the user's domain account to the local Power Users group of each computer.

  • On WinXP, users need to be an administrator or have admin rights to run the defrag?

Do you know of  a way to provide this ? thank you.

  • I quote the title of your question: "Need to give Power Users Rights to Run Win XP Defrag at their discretion"  Have you changed you mind?  If they need admin rights, the same applies:  Add them to the Local Administrator's group on each pc.

This is not a scripting question, as far as I can see.

  • It is not best practice to provide users administrator rights.

  • Hi,

The defrgui.msc and defrag.exe tools on XP require the account running them to be a member of Administrators.
