HP XP key not accepted RRS feed

  • i want to reinstall my hp machine back to the default os; in this case its xp home. so i took my xp home key,(the sticker on the casing) formatted my drive, placed the cd in the drive and after 15 minutes i had to enter my key. But my oem key(on the case) is not accepted. can some! explain this to me?? Cant i use a regular xp home cd; do i need a hp windows???

  • The HP OEM Windows XP product key will only work with the original HP Recovery procedure or disc.  It will not work with a "retail" Windows XP disc.  Please see: Performing an HP System Recovery in Windows XP.

    The alternative is to install Windows XP using the disc you have and type-in the product key that came with the disc.  However, do not activate it!  After installation is complete, use the  Windows Product Key Update Tool to type-in your HP OEM product key.
