Refreshing content between environments RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi -   I have a prod sharepoint farm with one site collection.    I would like to take all of the documents from one of the document libraries here and refresh it to a different DEV sharepoint farm.    is it better to use granular recovery in this case?  or can i just copy out the document library from prod and replace it to dev?   thanks

  • Well it will depend on the document library complexity. For instance:

    - if it´s just an OOB document library with a few documents, you can just save the library as template using the checkbox to include content.

    - If you have several documents and you need to mantain permissions, you can use export/import: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee428301.aspx.

    - And, if the doc library has workflows, event receivers, you may want to just backup/restore the entire content database.

  • You could do that, or my preferred way of doing it is to copy the content database to the pre-production SQL Server, restore it there, then attach it to the pre-production SP farm.  This would replace the entire site, of course.

  •  CA creates a timer job - backup/restore during granular backup so i  doubt this method will work as how will a new farm will be able to restore the documents backed up a diff server ?

You can use Export-SPWeb PowerShell to backup the data and then import the doc lib into another farm via Import-SPWeb or if the content size is very less save doc lib as template with contents and use it on nhew server
