Storing Credentials in a Power Query RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Is it possible to save credentials for a query in the Excel workbook or does this functionality totally rely on Power BI? We’re currently using Power Query without Power BI and are exposing a read-only data connection that is safe to distribute.

Related, if Power BI is needed, do we need to purchase licenses for every user or only those creating Power BI assets?

  • With respect to your first question, we currently never store any credentials in the Excel workbook. They're always stored in a user-specific fashion on the local computer.

  • In that case is there a way to create ODC files that will provide the connection and credential information for a Power Query?

  • I'm afraid not. These are things we're considering for the longer term, but for the predictable future we have made the deliberate decision not to allow any kind of credential information to be stored directly with the query or workbook.
