HELP! Messages stuck in SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer

Question
-
I am trying to figure out how to force the connection of some emais. I can find them in the message center but the emails do not make it to the persons inbox. The Symantec email filer is set to always allow the sender. Once I locate the email in the message center and look at the History it only gives me 3 lines the first one is SMTP: Message Submitted to Advanced Queuing, SMTP: Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue, and then SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer.
How do I force the email to connect and prevent it from happening in the future? Where can I find these emails?
I have re-booted the server and pushed everything out that was in the Queue. We are running Windows Server 2003 with Exchange 2003.
Thank you very much for any help!

I am seeing the same thing. With Microsoft's help last week, we uninstalled the Symantec antivirus server edition 10.1.6.6000, Scan engine 71.3.0.25, and the problem disappeared.
The problem is that outbound messages are getting stuck in the Categorizer and taking anywhere from 2-45 minutes to process to queuing to actually be sent out. After reinstalling this software today, we are noticing the latency again. I will be uninstalling at lunch once again to verify that Symantec is indeed causing the problem.
I have set up the proper Exchange exclusions according to Symantec. http://entkb.symantec.com/security/output/n2005040513412648.html
I will be calling Symantec today for their assistance, but if anybody has suggestions, please forward.
thanks.

Same problem here. I've since removed all Symantec software from my Exchange servers (including MSE) but the messages that got stuck in the Categorizer are still stuck. I need to find out how to un-stick them, or at very least figure out how many there are!

I found the problem in my situation. It actually wasn't Symantec causing the problem. I had a third party mail disclaimer message program that accessed Active Directory for clarification if the sender was internal/external. I had recently demoted the domain controller that was programmed into the third party software; so I had to change that setting.
You can view what is stuck in the categorizer by looking in your Queues folder under the e-mail server in the Exchange System manager. Look for the general folders for Directory lookup.

Same here Dave. Messages in the Tracking Centre are:
SMTP: Store Driver: Message submitted from store
SMTP: Message submitted to Advanced Queuing
SMTP: Started message submission to Advanced Queue
SMTP: Message submitted to Categoriser
When I check the Servers\%ServerName%\Queues, all categories have a green tick so they are working, all states say Ready and there are 0 messages under all categories.
So where have the messages gone?
I don't have any Symantec software installed on the server but do have Sophos PureMessage which seems to be working just fine. I don't understand where the message has gone. Normally if you send an external email to let's say microsoft.com, under the categories normally appears an SMTP event for domain microsoft.com but there are no mentions to any domains for outgoing mail.
Any ideas?
Cheers

I too have Pure Message installed, nothing in any of the Queue folders, and two emails that I know about (with attachements) that never were received. Sent from one internal Exchange mailbox to another, that never made it past the Catagorizer. I am told the Catagorizer is Pure Message. We reinstalled Pure Message yesterday, but that was hours before this isolated message got lost.
I have not called Sophos about this (yet).
Anyone have more info?
Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem.
I do not have Puremessage or Symantec installed, only Sophos Antivirus.
I too have set logging to Max and do not get any information regarding the missing messages.
NB all the messages that are getting stuck are Out of Office responses. They are not in the message queues.
Any info much appreciated.

I had this probelm also, but I want a new email domain on my server
my fix was.
go to the exchange server -> recipients->recipients policies right click on the default policy
and than add a new smtp domain under Email addresses (policy)
if you have done the open the command prompt and type IISRESET

I was able to force a message through by restarting SMTP. However, I only found out about the issue after someone called saying that a message to a distribution list didn't go through. I saw the following in message tracking:
Event Time Event
10/8/2009 4:41 PM SMTP Store Driver: Message Submitted from Store
10/8/2009 4:41 PM SMTP: Message Submitted to Advanced Queueuing
10/8/2009 4:41 PM SMTP: Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue
10/8/2009 4:41 PM SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer
Then nothing until the next day when I restarted SMTP and then,
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Message Submitted to Advanced Queuing
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Message Categorized and Queued for Routing
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Message Categorized and Queued for Routing
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Started Outbound Transfer of Message
10/9/2009 10:25 AM SMTP: Message Routed and Queued for Remote Delivery
etc.
The message was then delivered to all members of the distribution list.
The message wasn't visible in the Queues in ESM of the server where the mail was sent from nor was it visible in the "...Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue" folder on the server.
I've also noticed some delays in some mails to the distribution list as well:
10/5/2009 2:03 PM SMTP Store Driver: Message Submitted from Store
10/5/2009 2:03 PM SMTP: Message Submitted to Advanced Queueing
10/5/2009 2:03 PM SMTP: Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue
10/5/2009 2:03 PM SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer
10/5/2009 2:03 PM SMTP: Message Scheduled to Retry Cetegorization
then an hour passes
10/5/2009 3:03 PM SMTP: Message Categorized and Queued for Routing
10/5/2009 3:03 PM SMTP: Started Outbound Transfer of Message
10/5/2009 3:03 PM SMTP: Message Routed and Queued for Remote Delivery
etc.
The message was then delivered to all members of the distribution list.
Windows Server 2003 Ent. SP2
Exchange 2003 Ent. - Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2: Service pack 2)
TrendMicro OfficeScan 8.0
TrendMicro ScanMail 8.0
Has anyone else been able to force the messages through by restarting SMTP?
If anyone knows where we would be able to see these messages queued, that would be very helpful. Also, if anyone has found a resolution, that would be appreciated as well.
Thanks,

Have you seen this article?

I would apply the latest hotfix referenced.Friday, October 9, 2009 6:49 PM -
David,
I see that you have Officescan installed on your Exchange server. Please make sure you've set up all exclusions correctly:
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/Pages/Recommended-exclusion-list-for-OfficeScan-80-clients-installed-on-a-Mi.aspx
Also make sure you installed the latest service pack of Scanmail this fixes the following issue:
While ScanMail is running, after a few hours, email messages
will start to queue. If the user re-starts the ScanMail for
Microsoft Exchange service, the application will hang at
"Stopping".

Johan

What resolved this issue for me is when i found that GFI mail essential (spam filter)
which is installed on the same box with Exchange 2003.. found multiple GFI filters were set to delete - so any mail was caught by that filter never went to any queue to be viewed or found ... Now .. when i changed the GFI action behavior to send to xyz mailbox, instead of delete ... i can find those mysteriously disappearing emails in the mailbox i pointed to in GFI.
