Have loaded Windows 7 RC, now Quicken 2004 will not run. All I get is the opening splash screen, then nothing. Is there anyone out there who can help? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Initial problem was that 2 dll's were not available - msvcr70 and msc70. I dealt with this problem by copying said dll's into system32. I then uninstalled and reinstalled Quicken 2004 but could only briefly get splash screen, then nothing. I then used the compatibility feature in Windows 7 RC without any success. Programmes are installed on Toshiba notebook not using recovery disc, therefore making it a clean install. Other programmes have installed ok.
Previous platform was XP home service pack 3 with no problems experienced. Have 1.5gig ram, 1.6 intel processor dual core.

  • Hi thanks for reply.

Have after many frustating hours found a way to load Quicken 2004.
     1) Uninstall Quicken 2004.
    2) Reinstall Quicken 2004 via Compatibility programme found through the troubleshooting section of the control panel. Use Windows XP service pack 3.

    Hope this helps

  • Exactly the same for me. Think I'm going to give up on Quicken after best part of 20 years and switch to Accountz.

  • I'm using Quickbooks Pro 2007 on the W764RC.  Quicken 2004 is probably even no longer supported by Intuit as it's obsolete.  If you were to upgrade, you would have a better chance of things being compatable.

You're right, 2004 is not supported. But neither is any other release in UK. I imagine you are in North America? Quicken 2004 was the last UK release. If we can't make it work under W7, we either have to stick with an older version of Windows or switch to an alternative to Quicken. And Money is no longer an alternative.

Personal Accountz is excellent. It will import Quicken files, but they will need massaging after import - Accountz has an entirely different (superior, in my view) approach to accounts and categories. They also provide first-class support. I think it's UK-only though.

I'd prefer to get Quicken working for the time being, but that seems to be a problem.

  • NB: I have now got this working.

I copied the files: mfc70.dll msvcp70.dll msvcr70.dll from system32 on my existing vista system.

I set the compatibility options on the installation program "start.exe" to "windows xp sp3" and "run as administrator". After install, I did the same for the "qw.exe" and it all seems to work fine now.

    Hope this helps

  • I had the same problem but have got Quicken 2004 running by copying to Program Files/Quicken the following files from XP version.

    Files : mfc70.dll msvcp70.dll msvcr70.dll

    Hope this helps!

  • Your solution seems to work OK. It looks as if when you install Quicken 2004 from the original disk on wWindows 7 pro the files

mfc70.dll msvcp70.dll msvcr70.dll do not transfer correctly. They are downloaded but don't work correctly. I copied these files from my Windows 2000 installation and overwrote the same files on Windows 7 and it worked as in xp configuration immediately

  • Glad to see this post.  We run QuickBooks but also have to run Quicken 2004 for our escrow accounts.  The 2004 version is the last to support an import from our trade software.  The import will work with QB but QB is a less versatile and easy to work with product.  I much prefer Quicken for a simple single purpose account.
