RAM shows only 2GB when I have 4GB on a X64 Gigabyte MOBO. windows 7 RRS feed

    First off I have:
    System Type: x64 based PC
    Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) D CPU 3.00GHz 2 Cores, 2 Logic Processors. 
    Installed physical memory 2.00GB 
    Available Physical memory 1.30GB
    Total Virtual memory 4.00GB
    Available Virtual memory 2.96GB
    That is the information given on my "System Information"


    MOBO: Ultra Durable 3 Motherboard EP43-UD3L GIGABYTE.
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 

    I have 2 Ram sticks each 2 GB each. I should have 4 GB but it does not read on my Windows Task Manager witch only reads 2 GB, I have another Two ram sticks that are only 1 Gb each I added them and it only showed 4 GB that time witch by adding another 2GB i should have six (Hum Microsoft Math 2GB + 2GB = 2GB! & 2 GB + 2GB + 1GB +1GB = You guessed it! 4 GB!! OMG!?). It seems like 2 GB vanish into thin air. I have also put the plain 2 GB RAM to see if it reads that and it does only 2 GB as put. 

    So basically my question is why will it not show my full RAM? How can I to make it so it shows all my ram and not get ripped off half way?

    I have been doing a-lot of research and to no avail if someone can help me it would be GREATLY!!! APPRECIATED!

    Hello customer,

     

    First of all, upgrade BIOS to the latest version and restore it the factory default; remove all unnecessary hardware devices from the computer. Then download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check whether there exist any incompatibility issue. If the issue is caused by some incompatible driver, you might go to Device Manager, right click your hardware device in the list and select Update Driver Software; then click Search automatically for updated driver software.

    Honestly, that's sounding more hardware than OS-related.
    What's the BIOS have to say about it?
    Do you have the "memory remap" function enabled in your BIOS?  (refer to your manual for details on this.)
    What BIOS version are you running? 

    I'd also be interested in what Resource Monitor shows - notably, the "hardware reserved" portion of RAM (and, also in relation to the "total installed.")
    I'm guessing, though,  that "total installed" there will be equal to what System Properties shows.

    I have the latest BIOS on my MOBO I do not have any unnecessary hardware on my PC, I am downloading and running the program.

    I have also downloaded a program called DMIInfo witch gives all the specs of a computers hardware, Bios, Chipset,.. etc I learned that both RAM sticks are working except at half the capacity each are reading in at 1 GB.. Why ? I don't know, this is where I turn to you guys.

    Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor gave me nothing but green checks.. and reads 2GB witch I should have 4GB (Witch is my problem).

    Current Mother Board Information

    CPUId typically reports exactly what the BIOS reports (as opposed to OS-generated info.)  So, looks hardware-related, rather than an OS issue.
    That said, could you reboot the PC, enter BIOS Setup, and see what the BIOS itself states your RAM to be?  Just want to be sure here.

    I have looked all over the BIOS I can not find the RAM amount I found the Volts but no where does it say how much RAM I have.. But everything I have use to check the RAM has said the same thing bother are working at half the capacity. I Really don't understand how it is possible.

    If it is Hardware related, (keep in mind this is a brand new mother board no older then a week and a half), what can I do?

    It'll say on the POST screen.  If it POSTS too quickly, hit <Pause/Break> to, well, pause POST.
    You might need to enable "display POST information", or disable "show splash screen" to get it to display POST info.
    Also, disabling "quick POST" (or similar wording) will help you catch it.  Enabling "Quick POST" tells the BIOS to not sit there and count each bit of RAM.  With 4GB (or, even 2GB), it'll take quite a while to count all of it...  ;)

    One other way to check the BIOS-reported value directly (and, given your issue, this wouldn't be a bad idea, anyways) is to boot from a Memtest86+ disc.  Not only will it show you the total installed RAM (as directly reported by the BIOS - no OS interaction whatsoever), it'll test the RAM, too.  ;)

    Alright i am going to boot from the Memtest86+ tomorrow december 28. To check my RAM. So lets say it does only reads half of what is really installed what can i do? I now have 6gb installed but it only reads 4GB im so frustrated.. i want my full ram! Well I'll update and tell you what my computer tells me tomorrow.

    Hi again.
    I just checked Gigabyte's page for your board, and..... The latest (non-beta) BIOS for your board is F6.  F5's improvements included "improved memory capabilities"; you're currently running F4.
    Try a BIOS update before anything else:

    (NOT the Beta BIOS.  I'm not asking you to guinea pig yourself.  ;) Get the F6 BIOS.)

    I have the same problem and I am pretty sure it is not hardware. I have OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB and it only shows 2 gb in windows. Memtest shows all good.
    CPUid shows 4gb. I have booted my PC with both sticks alone and have then switch them and booted from the second slot as well as the first slot. I am at this point pretty sure it is software related. Also nothing is overclocked.

    Windows does say,

    Installed memory (RAM):    4.00 GB (2.00GB usable)

    Full specs:

    You say CPU-Z reports the ram as DDR2 400 instead of 800.  Well, it is double data rate, so the 400 is in fact correct.  1066 memory will display as 533, and so on.

    If your ram is truly 2GB per stick ( I know you have 1GB sticks too but I'm talking about the original post only 2 of 4GB being recognized)), then there are only three options:

    1). The bios isn't allowing the highest order address line to be controlled so half the memory isn't seen.
    2). The ram itself is actually 1GB sticks regardless of what they are marked or the packaging they came in.
    3). There is a problem with the highest order address line on the motherboard, either a bad solder connection, a failed component, or some other failure related to not being able to control the highest order address line.

    The above are listed in order of likelihood, and until you have the BIOS updated to the latest version, or can otherwise prove that your version of BIOS WILL recognize 2GB sticks, you are stuck trying to disprove #1 as the cause.

    Good luck with it, I hope it turns out to be the BIOS since that's the least hassle.

    This fixed my problem now I just need to figure out how it got checked.

     Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig into the run command box.
    On the "Boot" tab, click on advanced options.
    Make sure the box labelled "Maximum Memory" is NOT ticked. If it is, untick, save and restart.
