Support / experience with data deduplication technologies on the DPM storage pool RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We use Microsoft DPM 2010 voor backup of about 220 servers. We use a Dell Equallogic PS6500 for the storage pools for the DPM servers. Currently that's about 35 TB. Many datasources are System drives (C:) of the protected servers. Voor each System drive a separate replica is created in the storage pool.

We wonder whether we can reduce the data size on the stroage pool by using deduplication technology. We might want to use "ExaGrid® iSCSI Gateway  for Dell EqualLogic PS Series Storage" to accomplish this. They state on their site that they "will work with Microsoft to ensure compatibility with DPM". I have some queststions I'd like to drop here:

Is this a supported scenario for DPM?

Has anybody experience with dedupliaction on DPM storage pools?

Will it work for deduplicating the System drive replica's in the storage pool?

Will we gain significant amounts of storage with this?

    Are there any caveats?

    How about performance?

    All anwers are appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Klaus

  • As of today, DPM is not tested with any of the data de-deuplication solutions, unless otherwise explicitly stated. Please check with the vendors and make sure you understand the benefits data de-duplication savings in conjuction with DPM. Please share you are successfully able to deploy and seen the benefits of it on Forum so that it can help others.

  • Hi,

De-deuplication is supported in DPM 2012 R2. Here is the whitepaper on how to configure it: Deduplicating DPM storage.
