Remote WMI to Azure VM: The object exporter specified was not found RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone,

Reposting the problem specified in this forum.

I am trying to test remote WMI connectivity from my client computer to an Azure VM.

I am using the utility WBEMTest to test out remote WMI connectivity. This utility also allows me to specify the credentials of the local administrator account on the Azure VM.

However, I am getting the error "The object exporter specified was not found." See error screenshot below:

    • That Azure VM has an associated public IP address, and an associated DNS name. I have tried the connection with both the DNS name and the IP address.
    • Windows Firewall is disabled on the Azure VM.
    • There is no NAT box set up in front of the Azure VM.
    • I can RDP into the target VM just fine.
    • The WMI service is indeed running in target Azure VM
    • No further configuration was performed on the Azure VM beyond 1) creating a new Windows Server 2012 R2 VM, and 2) disabling Windows Firewall

Any ideas on what is wrong?

  • Azure hosts are not like a server that you have locally.  The whole cloud is firewalled and only specific tools work remotely.

To access an Azure VM remotely you will need to use WinRM with PowerShell.  You will not be able to use DCOM.  WMI and wbemtest use DCOM.
