How can I delete a folder in favorites that is too long RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a file saved in a folder in Favorites. The folder shows normal, but the file shows only a blank document and an address that starts with https. When I try to open it, or delete it, it says I can't because the file name or extension is too long. I can't open it in another tab or change the name either.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

I am using a Toshiba Laptop, Windows 8.1, IE 11, AV Webroot.

    Thank you

  • Hi,

Are you able to see the file in Windows Explorer, in the Favorites folder\Favorites Bar folder?

You can rename a file with long file name by renaming it using the short (8+3) Windows name.

    1. Open a Command Prompt (Admin) and find the directory with the file.
    2. Type: dir /X
this command will show the short 8+3 names followed by long names
    3. find the file you want to rename and use command: rename "shortname" "newname"
    4. "shortname" is 8+3 name and "newname" is name you want to rename to

    Example:

Let's say you have a file named "FileWithLongFileName.txt", it should have short name "FileW~1.txt" so you would use command: rename FileW~1.txt newname.txt

You should end up with file: "newname.txt".

See if this works for you.

    Best regards,
    Leon
