General DPM 2016 questions RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a few DPM 2012 R2 servers which we currently plan to upgrade to DPM 2016. Thus, I have some questions about DPM 2016 in general:

    - As far as I've understood DPM 2016 no longer pre-allocates volumes for replica/recovery point volumes. Can I take advantage of this just by upgrading my current platform (Windows Server 2012 R2) or does it require Server 2016 with i.e. ReFS formatted volume?

    - Does the Modern Backup Storage require ReFS on the system drive where DPM is installed or just the data volume/volumes?

    - Any further advantages with a clean install on Windows Server 2016 compared to upgrading the current installation on Windows Server 2012 R2 server?

  • Hello,

Modern Backup Storage is enabled when DPM 2016 is installed on Windows Server 2016 and ReFS is required only on data volume. So the answer is yes, you will need to upgrade the OS to Windows Server 2016.
