Link to Document RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good Day

In SP2010 I have a document Library called "Document Repository".  I want to add a Content Type "Link to Document" and I am able to do it but it does not link to a url...it links to a document template.  Any ideas how I can get the out of the box link to document fucntion back?

  • Thanks to all who helped on this.

    I found the problem

It appears that my Document Template URL had been deleted

I replaced it with this (/_layouts/NewLink.aspx)

    and it works fine now.

Thanks to all who helped, Tim

  • Hello,

Did you add the columns in the content type that point out to the URL???

  • Hi,

Are you using the modified content type? Check in site content type gallery if you are using the correct one or not.

  • The link to content type is added by default to SharePoint 2010 document stores as part of the OOB template and is really best used when linking to current documents to avoid replication.

If you need to use a template, which is going to be reused, it's not a good fit for this content type.  You'd be best creating a new content type based on the Document one and adding the template via the advanced settings.

  • Thank You for your responce

Perhaps I was not clear enough in my post. I am trying to link to a library that has several documents.  I went to "Library Settings" Content Type and selected "Add from existing Content Types" and then selected "Link to a document".

It placed the type in my content types but when I try to use it I do not get a form to select a document.  What I get is a direct link into a blank Word template.docx from the root site.

I thought it should have brought up a form to let me select a document url.

Thanks for your help, Tim Lewis

  • Thank You

I am using the "Link to a document" type from the "Document Content Types" in the Gallery.

I thought it would bring up a form that let me add a url to link to a document.

Instead I get a direct link into a blank Word Template.docx from the root site.

Am I misinterperting how this link should work?

    Thanks, Tim Lewis

  • Odd, when I use it, I see something like this: -

Have you tried adding it to another list/library and seeing if it creates the same behaviour?
