Any difference 2008 / 2008R2 deal with thumbs.db in shared folder

-
Hi all,
We got 3 windows server provide files service, two 2008 and one 2008 R2, in workgroup. Most user using Windows 10/7.
Just handling a inquiry from users that they cannot move / delete folders immediately on 2008 R2 with reason "thumbs.db being accessed by Windows Explorer". I understand thumbs.db should be created by client side, and its Windows Explorer lock the thumbs.db.
I check out for a while, it can be avoid by "Always show icons, never thumbnails." to disable thumbnails. However, it is not a option to fit us, as thumbnails quite useful in routine tasks, which handling a lot graphic files.
After further check out, users only report this thumbs.db issue when using shared folder on 2008 R2, but not 2008s. I look into 2008 servers, thumbs.db files also created by user.
I wonder if there are difference between 2008 and 2008R2 shared folder when handling thumbs.db? or any configuration can be deal with this issue?
Thanks

Hi Cenny,
Thumbs.db is created when using thumbnail preview. If is normal and not necessary to delete it.
For more information about Thumbs.db, you may refer to the following link.

For now, I haven't find the statement that this only happens to server 2008 R2 or specific OS version.
And i have also seen other scenarios, that the problem happens to server 2008. Not sure the two version is different.
So I'm afraid we couldn't tell the difference between 2008 and 2008R2.
But there's the workaround for such issue you could take a look.
Please try Disable the generation of thumbs.db files by the Local Group Policy Editor and such problems will be resolved.
Here are several scenarios discussed before, you could also take a look.

Hi Cenny,
Thanks for your feedback.
For now I haven't find the updates about this. There's not really a good way to control this "server side" excepted the group policy mentioned before.
According to the thread discussed before. Maybe you could also try FSRM.
Disable creation of thumbs.db file
- Open the File Server Resource Manager administrative tool.
- Define a new File Group that includes "Thumbs.db"
- Define a new custom File Screen to use active screening, and select your custom file group for Thumbs.db files. You may optionally choose to send a warning to the event log each time a file is blocked.
- Use a Windows client to browse some images on the share, and verify that Thumbs.db is no longer created.
Best Regards,
Mary
