  • Do you mean can you do an in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2016 Essentials or Windows Server 2016 Standard/Datacenter with the Windows Server Essentials Experience (WSEE) (seeing as a "Windows Storage Server 2016 Essentials" was never released by Microsoft)? If so, then I would imagine that you can indeed do that since Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials is really just Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with WSEE added (albeit a special OEM only edition with predefined hardware limits). Obviously, you'd need a new Product Key for licensing 2016, and your server hardware would need to be able to support the minimum requirements for 2016. Personally, I'd just wipe it out completely and start fresh with Windows server 2016 Essentials if it were me (as I don't like doing in-place upgrades nor domain migrations).

  • We do like migrations and sometimes we also do an in-place upgrade, see In-place upgrade of Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 to Windows Server Essentials 2016 on the same hardware

  • HI

Can i upgrade my Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials to WSS 2016 Essentials or another version?
1 Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials is special os version for small business ,but i am not sure if there is still Windows Storage Server 2016 Essentials put on sale .so can you enter
dism /online /Get-TargetEditions in command prompt(open as admin)
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/dism-windows-edition-servicing-command-line-options
(1)if there is Windows Storage Server 2016 Essentials  ,i think you can upgrade Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials to Windows Storage Server 2016 Essentials.
(2)if there is server standard ,i think we need to upgrade to Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 standard first then upgrade to Windows Storage Server 2016 standard. we need Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 standard product key and Windows Storage Server 2016 standard product key.
for this condition ,I still suggest to do migration not do in-place upgrading ,so do you have another new server to install storage server 2016 standard then migrate your data from Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

2 from below document ,there is no upgrading from
Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials to Windows Storage Server 2016 standard option directly .
