DPM 2016 type and number of licenses needed RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need help to know what type of licenses i need.

I have a physical server (AD role) 1 processor with 4 Cores and I have license those cores

    I have  a second physical server (Hyper-V host) with 1 processor 16 cores which i have license 3 times 16 cores because i have 6 VMs .

DPM DataCenter 2016 will run on one of the VMs.

    I need to backup

    • Physical Server #1 : BM and System State, Volume
    • Physical Server  #2: BM and System State, Volume
    • Hyper-V : all VMs (except DPM VM of course)
    • VMs : 2 of the VMs will have SQL which i want to backup separate from whole VM backup.

Since i have license the cores per physical server do i need to license again the cores for the DPM? If i do what license do I need.

Thanks a lot guys for any help.

  • Hello!

Licensing questions are always best addressed directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist.

    https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/Help/Contact.aspx

I'll try to give you some quick information though:

System Center 2016 Server Management Licenses

    Core-based licensing

    • System Center 2016 Standard and Datacenter Server
      MLs are Core-based licenses.

    • A Server ML Core license must be assigned to each
physical core in the server, with a minimum of 8 Core
licenses per processor, and a minimum of 16 Core
licenses per server. For example, a single processor
server with 4 cores requires 16 Server ML Core
licenses, and a 4 processor server with 8 cores on each
processor requires 32 Server ML Core licenses.

    • Server ML Core licenses are purchased in 2-packs from resellers and
      always include Software Assurance.

    Virtualization Rights

    • System Center 2016 Datacenter
The server must be fully licensed with Server ML Core licenses (as
described in the Core-based Licensing section).
An unlimited number of virtual machines may be managed on the server.
    • System Center 2016 Standard
The server must be fully licensed with Server ML Core licenses (as
described in the Core-based Licensing section)
2 virtual machines may be managed on the server.
The server must be licensed again to manage a further 2 virtual
machines. For example, a single processor server with 8 cores requires 16

Server ML Core licenses to manage 2 VMs. A further 16 Server ML Core
licenses must be assigned to the server to manage another 2 VMs.

    Best regards,
