SQL Upgrade from 2012 to 2016 - SharePoint Impact

    Question

  • Hi-

We are going through a SQL migration/upgrade.  It will be detached and re-attached from SQL 2012 to SQL 2014.  Then, the 2014 version will be in-place upgraded to 2016.

From a SharePoint 2013 perspective, what steps need to be taken to support this transition and is it compatible?

    Thanks!

    Jesse

  • Ah yeah, you just need SharePoint 2013 to be at SP1 or higher prior to migrating.

  • SharePoint 2013 does not support SQL 2016. You'll need to stop at SQL 2014. But generally in-place upgrades of SQL are painless. I've _never_ had an issue doing in-place upgrades of SQL 2005 or higher.

  • Doing a detach and re-attach approach - are there things that need to change to have SharePoint connect to the new SQL 2014 server?
