Protection Group Creation SQL Cluster Fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to create a protection group using DPM2012SP1 for a SQL 2008R2 2-node cluster. After 2 seconds, the creation fails with the message:

Create protection group: Maspeth SQL Cluster failed:
Error 419: DPM could not set security permissions on the replica or recovery point volume that was created.
Error details: The system cannot find the path specified
Recommended action: Review the error details, take appropriate action and retry the operation.

The sql writers look ok. confirmed with vssadmin list writers and diskshadow /l. It sees all the luns for the cluster. There are numerous errors in the DPMRACurr.log on the active cluster node:

I have another SQL cluster that is setup identically that works with no problems.

  • Hi,

The above errors are normal on the SQl server cluster DPM is simply querying to see if Geocluster and Veritas volume manager disk groups resources exist on your cluster, in this case error 5078 means we didn't find either.

    C:\>net helpmsg 5078

The specified resource type was not found.

The real error will be on the DPM server itself.  Are you using >512 byte sector size disks in the DPM storage pool ?

Run msinfo32.exe on the DPM server and at the disks in the storage pool and see if Bytes/Sector is 4096 (or anything other than 512)

  • It is 4096. I just went through the process of trying to create the group again. I see the following in the logs on the DPM server.

    MSDPMCurr.errlog:

Allocating volumes for datasource f92a36ea-be78-4a42-afd6-7ade0db9f4c4 name MASSQLCLUSTER\MASRDCB2012 failed with Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.Utils.StoragePoolManagerSecurityException: CreateFile failed due to Security error: -2147024893.
