Disabling default web page on WSUS server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello All,

The default installation of WSUS includes an installation of IIS. This default installation also includes the generic IIS web page http://<hostname>.

I need to disable this default web page in response to a security scan. How do you disable that default webpage without affecting the function of the WSUS server?

(is this an appropriate question here, or should it be posted to an IIS forum?)

    Thanks,

    Paul

Answers

  • I tried disabling the default website and left the WSUS website running. That got rid of the default web page, and it appears to not have affected the WSUS functionality.

I'm going to watch it a few days and make sure no problems related to WSUS crop up before being confident the issue is resolved.

  • Hi Paul,
Are you talking about to disable default web site from WSUS server? If yes, it is not suggested to do that from WSUS aspect, can I ask why you want to disable that?
And as you said, I agree with you that this question is better to ask in IIS forum regarding how to disable it:

  • It's a security requirement in response to a Nessus scan. Nessus flags web servers that show a default web page, even if the web page doesn't show any information and only links to Microsoft public web pages

  • It appears that disabling the default website worked and left the WSUS website running. As far as I can tell so far it hasn't caused any issues.
