Will this Ram setup work? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have 64bit Ultimate with two 2gb sticks, I was wondering could I put another 2gb stick in the computer and run 6gb total. I know 64bit can read it but how would I setup in the computer? I have two mushkin ddr2 800 PC6400. The extra stick I wanted to use is a simpletech ddr2 667 pc5400.

You must be very careful when adding RAM.

The RAM chips must all have the same specs. Adding a stick that has a slower bus speed can have the effect of slowing all of the other installed sticks. This is even if it will work at all.

Check with the Motherboard or Computer manufacturer for the required specifications for the RAM sticks.

The safest way to do this is to buy the 'exact' same chips that are currently installed, including brand.

Once you do everything properly, the setup is automatic. You simply plug the extra RAM stick in and start the computer. The BIOS will recognize the new chips and so will Windows.

    Hope this helps.
