Clients get error in Windows Update trying to install client. RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have clients setup to receive the forefront client install through WSUS, we have a two-server topology. Clients that had forefront installed are getting definition updates but new client machines get an error in Windows update when installing forefront. Also forefront always first pushes a client that appears to be really old (definitions from 2006) on first install, is there anyway to update this? Here is the event ID from a client machine that fails to install Forefront through Windows update:

  • I found the Answer, runing WSUSUTIL RESET will re-download any WSUS updates that are approved but the installers are missing.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the post.

First of all, please vierfy if we have performed the steps provided in this link: (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb404232.aspx)

If the steps are fine, please check network connectivity on the WSUS client computer

    1. Open Internet Explorer.

    2. In the Address bar, type:

      http://WSUSServerName/selfupdate/wuident.cab

where WSUSServerName is the name of the WSUS server. You should be prompted to download or open wuident.cab. This verifies network connectivity from the WSUS client and the availability of the wuident.cab file on the WSUS server. If you do not have connectivity or the Web site is not configured correctly, you will get an HTTP error. Check the network settings of the WSUS server and any proxy servers.

    3. If there are any boxes prompting you to download or save, click Cancel.

If you are prompted to save or download both of these files, see the next section.

Check logs on the WSUS client computer

Check the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log on the client computer to see if there has been any activity or any attempts to contact the server, such as cached server pingbacks.

    Thanks,

    Miles

  • Hi Miles thanks for the reply.

1.)Steps have been performed as outlined in the first link.

2.)When I go to a client machine and type in the WSUS link I do get a pop-up download box to open or save the wuident.cab file. Which it does download successfully. This is happening on more than 1 client.

3.) Here is an excerpt from the WindowsUpdate.log after trying to install the forefront client through Windows update....win7x64

  • I see the issue, If I browse the WSUS server for /Content/82/0B1292729F8F6963AD0AA0A74B21762E94BEC782.exe that file doesn't exist...so that would be why it's failing. How can I get a ForeFront Client installer back on the WSUS server? Not only an installer but have it stop pushing out update notifications for the old one?

A few weeks back we were trying to solve some WSUS issues..and deleting the WSUScontent folders was a tried fix (turned out to be a malfunctioning firewall). I think there are a few updates that were approved but didn't get re-downloaded by WSUS, Forefront installer being one of them. I tried to use the import updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog...the Forefront version my clients are listing (1.0.1728.0) can't be found on that website....however I did try it with a small update and it downloaded ok but my client still can;t download the update so I don't know why that didn't work.
