delegated _msdcs zone RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have a small query regarding delegated _msdcs zone.

In DNS Manager, expand your server name, and then expand Forward Lookup Zones, Click the forward lookup zone for your Active Directory domain (for example: abc.local) ,The delegated _msdcs zone appears as a greyed out folder, Right-click the _msdcs zone, and then click Properties, On the Name Servers tab I have only one server name mentioned whereas I have 4 DNS servers.

Should there be just one DNS server listed in the delegated _msdcs zone if yes then which one should it be (local) ? or all 4 DNS servers entries should be added ?

    Can someone please suggest.

    Thanks.

  • Hi AtulRam,

The _msdcs delegation under abc.com is useful when the _msdcs.abc.com is not stored in a particular DNS server and a query to _msdcs.abc.com was made to that DNS server. The name server in _msdcs properties needs to hold the entire zone of _msdcs.abc.com.

Usually, the name server in _msdcs properties is the PDC of the domain, if you want to add other name servers that hold the entire zone "_msdc.abc.com", things will be OK too. But if everything works well, we may keep the original configuration.

  • Hi,

All 4 Name servers should be added as this is an AD integrated zone all the DC(DNS Server) should have the same record replicated. As Active Directory uses a multi-master replication methodology. Find the below link for more information about _msdcs zone.
