SCCM 2012 R2 to SCCM 1602 Upgrade Action Plan RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys,

I have been assigned the task to upgrade our existing "SCCM 2012 R2 CU2" infra to "SCCM 1602" using in-place upgrade. My SCCM 2012 Infra consists 1 Stand-alone Primary Site, 5 Secondary Sites, 275 DPs, 70,000 Clients.

Can somebody please help me with the action plan.

As per my understanding below should be the the action plan but I am confused about when to apply update 1602. Should I apply update 1602 immediately after upgrading Primary Site (without upgrading Secondary Site and agents to 1511) or i need to upgrade Primary Site, all Secondary Sites and all clients to 1511 first ?

    Action Plan:

    1) Backup SCCM 2012 Primary Site Server using Backup maintenance task

    2) Restore SCCM Database backup on separate SQL Server and test Database upgrade

    3) Uninstall ADK 8 from Primary Site Server and install ADK 10

    4) Run SCCM 1511 Setup and perform in-place upgrade

    5) Test Agent upgradation on 5-10 Test machines using Client Push installation method

    6) Test all SCCM feature/functionalities

    7) Upgrade all 5 Secondary Sites to SCCM 1511

    8) Upgrade all 70000 clients to SCCM 1511

    9) Install update 1602 from SCCM console

    10) Test SCCM 1602 agent upgradation on 10-20 test machines in Pre-production environment

    11) Upgrade all 5 Secondary Sites to SCCM 1602

    12) Test all SCCM feature/functionalities

    13) Update all 70000 clients to SCCM 1602

    14) Finish.

  • You don't have to upgrade secondaries or clients to 1511. You can go to 1602 and upgrade them then.

  • Hi,

Normally you should do a new testdbupgrade test when moving from 1511-1602 and as Torsten wrote, skip the client upgrade.

  • Related to this, SCCM is going to upgrade the 275 DPs in his system starting with the 1511 install.  Question should he wait for that to complete, or go ahead and start the 1602 update without waiting for the DPs to be updated.

Related to that, does anyone know of a way to know how to determine the SCCM version level of components.  I can't think of a place where its shown in the console.  I suspect it may be in one of the SQL views but haven't had a chance to go looking for it yet.
