Smart Tags / Additional Actions - What should I develop in 2007 which will update to 2010/2013? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to develop for at least Word and Excel the ability to recognise a pattern of text and then allow the user to do something with it.  If that sounds strange then I want to write a smart tag.  I know smart tags only go till 2010.  I also understand that currently it is Additional Actions for 2013.

So I am in a company environment where they have, believe it or not just rolled out Office 2007.  So what should I develop for 2007 that will be updatable to 2010 or 2013 whenever they decide to roll it out.

  • I had the opportunity to make a test VSTO smart tags app for 2007 and then install it on Office 2010 and Office 2013 machines.  It seems that the API stuff has not changed.  The names and how it is implemented has.  On 2007 it is still a smart tag you see on the document eg. Word.  In 2010/2013 you have to right click on the "a thing" you think might be a tag.  Kinda like turning left in a car and no knowing until you have turned if there is a street there.

So at least in my case i did not have to change my code at all for 2010 or 2013.  That is strange but a good thing.
