Cannot update to 2012 R2 UR6 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I cannot update one of my DPM servers to DPM 2012 UR6 running on Windows 2012 R2. Currently UR5 is installed. Looking at the logs I think it might be related to the VSS Null Provider. This provider is in fact missing on this DPM server. I cannot find it in the registry, Component Servers and vssadmin list providers...

The installation log which seems to show the error:

  • Hi Marcus,

Open the installation log and look for "Return value 3" or "Return: 3". Once you locate this, look immediately above that line for error details.

If you need further help or cannot locate return value 3. Please post the full installation log!

    Kind Regards
    Markus

This also seems to point to an issue with the provider.

  • Hi,

Can you see the VSS Null Provider-service among the other services?
If yes, is it running or stopped?

  • The VSS Null Provider service is listed and it can be started, but it is not listed as a shadow copy provider nor visible in DCOM.

Meanwhile I was provided with a script by Microsoft to manually install the VSS Null Provider. Running this script showed that there were out of memory errors! Looking further into this I suspected the SQL server running on the DPM server but it was not caused by it. The issue was caused by the virtualized DPM server or by Hyper-V itself: The VM was set to use dynamic memory with 64 GB startup memory, 8 GB min memory and max memory only limited by the memory available on the host. Starting up the VM, after about 1 minute allmost all memory was allocated but I couldn't figure out from what. Changing the memory configuration to fixed 64 GB fixed that and I could run the script to manually install the VSS Null Provider successfully.

    Now trying to install UR6...

  • Hi,

Great that you were able to run the script after configured memory.

The error "hr=0x8007000e" in the log states this but I have never encountered an update rollup installation that fails due to insufficient memory.

Please post your result on how the installation went! :)

  • UR6 is now installed!

But as soon as I click on any job filter like "all jobs in progress" I get this error: "Unable to connect to the DPM database because of a general database failure. Make sure that SQL Server is running and that it is configured correctly. ID: 945 Details: SQL error code: 2812"....

Nightmare! Now I need to figure out what is going on here...

  • I need to ask if I may make this publicly available first...

  • I had a memory issue before when upgrading from UR4 to UR5. Had to increase the memory of the VM from 14 to 32 GB at this time. But now going to 64 GB didn't help at all. Very weird.
