Issues with VMM Backups using DPM 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We get a lot of errors from our DPM 2012 server when doing a backup of VM's using VMM:

Type: System.Management.Automation.CmdletInvocationException, Message: Unable to connect to the VMM management server. The Virtual Machine Manager service on that server did not respond. (Error ID: 1602)

We made sure that the VMM 2012 server is up and running, and still we got a lot of these errors. How can we fix this?

  • Hi Guido,

    Sorry for a late reply.

    Please make this clear:

    1. Are you backing up VM's on a CSV cluster?
    2. Please verfy that both the VMM service AND the SQL services are running on the VMM host. Both are depening on the functionality of VMM's access.
    3. Are you protecting your Hyper-V enviroment using a "Virtual Machine Live Migration - Uninterupted data protection"?

Please have a look at the following URL: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj656643.aspx

If number 3: Verify the firewall configurations also mentioned on the above URL.

I will be looking forward to your answer.

  • Robert,

1: No this just stand-alone Hyper-V machines with local disks (RAID-5)

    2. VMM Services and SQL Services are running.

    3. Yes we use Live Migration.

We have no firewall between the Hyper-V hosts and the DPM server. The backups does work, but at the end the backups seems to still and all further backups are failing. At the same time the VMM Service and DPM-VMM Helper service doesn't respond at all, and we can only do a restart of the service to get backup into VMM again.

  • Ok, thankyou for your information. Could you please be so kind and post the local log DMPRAcurr that is located in the temp catalouge of the DPM server (C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Temp)

Please make a snippit from the Point in time you start the backup to the Point in time it fails.

  • Robert,

Thanks. Our backups start at 17:00 till 18:00 with a consistency check. Then from 18:00 till 22:00 hr the disk backups kick off. I have uploaded the log file to my SkyDrive and it's located here:
