Transfer DNS from windows server 2003 to windows server 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi

i have a win server 2003 which is web server and dns server, now i move my web sites to new win server 2012 , and now i want to move dns to new server 2012, according to migrate DNS thread, its not possible to migrate dns from 2003 to 2012.

i search and i found afew article for this senario, the one is to install dns on new 2012 server as secondry and then move dns zones , and then change the zones to primary zone and finally remove the server 2003.but i dont know if this method work on windows server 2012 or not ??

the second way is to transfer zone files as this article says Migrate dns from 2003 to 2008 , manually move dns zones files, but these is about 2003 and 2008, is this method work on server 2012 ??

which is the better way or is there another way?

  • Hello,

please understand that other articles then Microsoft are out of support here and you can try them with your OWN RISK.

As the direct migration from DNS server is not supported i would go over Windows server 2008/R2 and then use Windows server 2012. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755303.aspx
