Hyper-V 2016 running Windows Server 2003 VM?

    Question

  • Hi all,

Windows Server 2003 is not supported as a guest VM on Hyper-V 2016.

But I have a case where we need to keep an old Windows Server 2003 running for approx another 5 years.

Has anybody tried to run Windows Server 2003 as a VM under Hyper-V 2016?

If yes - any problems/fixes/need-to-know-trics I should be aware of?

    Thx.

PS: I know Windows Server 2003 is EOL and should be long gone, but it's not going to happen in this case!

  • Hi,

Short answer-> yes it will run.

Just because it's not supported doesn't mean it won't work.

But where is it running now? I would go and run some test in a mirrored setup if possible.

  • Yes,

    I have a 2003 x64 standard running on a server 2016 core. I installed integration services from 2012 r2 iso manually.

  • Hi Jesper,

I am well aware of the difference between "not supported" and "not working", this is excactly why I reach out to hear from people, who has tried it.

Have you run Windows Server 2003 as a VM on Hyper-V 2016?

  • Hi Jens,

According to the following link, server 2003 is not a supported guest OS on Hyper-V 2016.

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/compute/hyper-v/supported-windows-guest-operating-systems-for-hyper-v-on-windows

Though it would work, there may be some unexpected errors.

    Best Regards,

    Leo

  • The migration of the old Windows Server 2003 from XenServer 6.2 went smoothly: I exported the VM and grabbed the VHD file, created a new VM in HyperV, installed Integration Services from HyperV 2012-R2, rebooted and removed XenTools.

I do however get one warning about a failed driver on boot, but nothing that I need to look further into as everything is working.
