Backup of Virtual machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I want to take a backup of all virtual machines but cannot stop them and take their backup as they are running group policies and other software.

I want to know how can I take a backup with snapshots.

    Thank You

  • You can't and don't.  Snapshots are not backups, and should not be used as such.

There are many backup solutions to backup VMs.  Veeam, Unitrends, etc.

You can also backup inside the VM using regular Windows backup without shutting down the VM.

  • Started on Server 2012, you can now export the VM inside HyperV Manager.

Search TechNet on how to export/ import VMs on 2012

If you are using Server 2008, you can run Robocopy technology to get and backup running VMs without compromising the production.
